Week 10 & 11 - Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
Well, I’ve had an incredibly busy and truly fabulous Christmas this year, and now that the decorations are coming down and the last of the leftovers are disappearing, I’ve finally had a moment to sit and reflect on it all. I hope you also had a wonderful time with your loved ones and that Father Christmas brought you something lovely. He certainly treated me well — I got a bread maker, which I’m thrilled with. It might not seem like the sort of present anyone would want, but honestly, it's great that I'll never have to buy an ultra‑processed loaf again. I’ve already made a couple of loaves and the smell of fresh bread filling the house is lovely.
One of the biggest highlights of the festive season, though, had nothing to do with presents or food. On Christmas Eve, I actually hit my target of a 5‑stone loss. I’d been inching closer for weeks, but with the study coming to an end, I was beginning to think I might not quite make it in time. So when I finally stepped on the scales and saw that number, it felt like a real achievement. Now I’m aiming to lose another 5lbs, which will finally take my BMI out of the obese range. I'm hoping to do it by the end of January but it's going to take a lot of work and focus.
Of course, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without indulging, and indulge I did. I enjoyed all the rich foods I love: mince pies, chocolates, shortbread, crisps, nuts, and cake. I even had wine and prosecco. The difference this year was that I simply can’t eat or drink as much as I used to. My portions were naturally smaller, and I didn’t feel the urge to keep picking at things just because they were there. Still, I was a bit nervous when I weighed in on New Year’s Eve. After all, Christmas week is usually a write‑off. So imagine my surprise, and relief, when I discovered I’d maintained. Result!
We had a lovely time with family too. Some came over on Boxing Day and others the day after, because my house is far too small to fit everyone in at once. I put on buffets of sausage rolls, sandwiches, chicken wings, sausages on sticks, cheese and pineapple, and plenty of cakes. It was chaotic in the best way — kids running around, adults chatting, games being played, and that warm, cosy feeling of being surrounded by people you love.
New Year’s Eve was a bit different this year as well. Me and my husband went to the local pub with some old friends. It was the first time we’d been out to see in the new year in ages; usually we prefer to stay at home and toast the new year together, but we decided to make an effort so I got dressed up, put on makeup, even wore high heels, and I felt fabulous. The confidence I’ve gained from losing weight is something I never expected to feel so strongly. If you’re thinking about using weight‑loss medication, my honest advice is: do it. You won’t regret it.
Now, despite all the festivities being over, there are still far too many goodies lurking in the cupboards. My husband has gallantly offered to “save me from myself” by eating them all. My hero. Every year we say we won’t buy so much food and every year we forget and do it anyway. I’ve been looking up recipes to use things up, and I’m sure the grandkids will polish off the chocolates soon enough.
I also heard from SheMed recently. They contacted everyone on the study to say they were working on a gift to thank us for taking part and sharing our data. As you know, I’ve been paying £99 per Wegovy pen regardless of the dose. I had planned to stop once I reached 52 weeks and join a slimming club to keep me on track, with the idea that if I struggled, I could always go back on the jabs. But then the offer came through at £129 per month for as long as we want to continue. Considering the cheapest I’ve found 2.4mg Wegovy is £180, it was too good an offer to pass up. And even better, this month, I only paid £99 despite it being my 14th pen. Bonus!
Now I'm on 2.4mg of Wegovy, I've noticed a lot more suppression and I feel full very quickly. I have had some bouts of nausea but they don't last long. I also get hungry but I it's something that will happen when I do finally stop so it feels like it will help when I have to maintain my weight by myself.
So, here are my current stats:
Weight - 11st 10lb
BMI - 30
Total weight loss since 6th Jan 2025 - 5 stone 0lbs
Total Wegovy loss - 6.5lb
Wegovy dose - 2.4mg
Finally, my gym membership starts this month. I need to figure out which classes fit around work and everything else, but I was delighted to see they offer a step box class, something I used to do about 20 years ago. I never thought I’d be excited about going to the gym again, but here we are. I’m genuinely looking forward to my first class and to seeing what this next chapter brings. I'll let you know how I get on.
Until next week then x
