My Mounjaro Journey Week 1 - Injecting Yourself Isn't As Bad As You Think!

I've completed my first week of Mounjaro and it hasn't been what I expected at all.

My box arrived after I received a copy of my medical results.  I'm currently prediabetic and need to take action before I develop type 2 diabetes.  The box contained medication for diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and trapped wind.  Obviously every eventuality needs to be covered! There was a box of needles, a sharps bin and the Mounjaro pen.

I had been told to download the SheMed app and the instruction said to click the 'take injection' button.  Once I clicked the link, I was taken through to a call centre.  The operative asked me to confirm my identity and then asked me to stand on my scales before showing them the reading. They then talked me through using the pen.

The first thing is to decide where you want to inject and to wash your hands. It's quite difficult to explain the operation, but I'll try.  The medication is in a tube and resembles a fat pen.  The needle needs to be attached to the end you would think of as the 'nib' and is clipped on before twisting to secure it..  You then remove the cap from the needle and twist the bottom of the pen.  This primes the needle to make sure there are no bubbles.  The next part seems to take forever.  You need to twist the bottom of the pen until a '1' appears.  Once you get to this point, the pen is ready.

I decided to inject my stomach.  The pack comes with alcohol wipes which you use to clean the injection site.  Then comes the deed itself.  I was very nervous and I think most people would be.  The needle isn't big; only about 5mm long, but it's still quite daunting having to inject yourself.  I took a deep breath, relaxed, and pushed it into my skin in one smooth movement.  I felt absolutely nothing.  You then push the button on the end of the pen firmly until it's pushed all the way in and hold for 10 seconds. And that's it; the deed is done.

I knew that there was a possibility of getting a headache but I haven't had any, which is obviously good news.  I didn't really feel any effects at all on the day I had the jab. The following morning I woke up and couldn't decide how I felt.  Was I hungry? Yes, so I had breakfast. I was expecting to immediately be food adverse but I wasn't; however, I did notice that I didn't think about food all morning.

Now, if you've been wondering what 'food noise' means, it's this: you think about eating all the time. I think about breakfast as soon as my eyes are open.  Whilst I eat my breakfast I'm thinking about what to have for lunch.  Whilst I eat my lunch I'm thinking about dinner.  And, in between all of that, I'm thinking about snacking.  It takes all of my willpower to stop myself from eating all day. So, me not thinking about biscuits or lunch at all during the morning is a bit like Elon Musk deciding not to tweet about something that's none of his business for a few hours. I ate lunch and dinner with no issue but I did feel able to stop eating when I was full.

The next day I still felt able to eat but I did have 'eggy' burps.  This lasted the whole day and wasn't pleasant but didn't cause me too many problems.  I had a bout of nausea for about an hour but nothing more.  Again, I found that I wasn't thinking about food very often but still managed to eat three meals.  I used one of the tablets for trapped wind which seemed to help.

When I woke the following day, I was back to normal.  No wind, no burping but also no real aversion to food.  I think I was expecting the medication to suddenly start working as expected but it just didn't. Since then, I've had 'food noise' but not to the same level as before.  I'm eating three meals a day, but not overeating, which is definitely down to the medication.  I usually eat everything on my plate regardless of whether I'm full or not.

I weighed in today.  This is pretty much the same as the first time.  You're connected to the call centre via the app and are asked to weigh yourself and show the result to the operative.  They will also take you through the injection if you wish.  I've lost weight, so it's a win this week.

Weight - 15st 13lbs
Mounjaro dose - 2.5mg
Loss - 2lbs

The loss may not seem a great deal but I actually started dieting a couple of weeks before I started taking the injection and I've actually lost 11lbs in three weeks, to be honest, 1 to 2 lbs a week is what you should be aiming for or you just end up losing muscle.

I took my injection by myself today and it didn't go well.  I'll tell you about it next time.

Bye x
