My Wegovy Kick Off - Week 1

Hello all

My blog is late because I went to Manchester for the weekend to watch the Lionesses take on Brazil at the Etihad – one of the stadiums on my bucket list. It was absolutely worth the five-hour drive, even though England didn’t win. I wasn’t expecting a victory, to be honest – we’re riddled with injuries and had several debutants on the pitch. The defence was makeshift, with Millie Bright retired, Lucy Bronze benched, and Leah Williamson and Hannah Hampton out injured. Khiara Keating made her debut in goal, becoming the first female goalkeeper of ethnic minority background to play for England – a proud moment despite the pressure.

The match itself was a rollercoaster. Brazil came out flying, scoring twice in the first 18 minutes thanks to Zaneratto and Dudinha. England looked rattled, but Ella Toone drew a foul from Brazil’s captain Angelina, who was sent off. That gave us a lifeline, and Georgia Stanway converted a penalty to make it 2–1. We hit the bar twice and had chances through Russo, Mead, and Bronze, but Brazil held firm. It was frustrating, but also a reminder of how much depth we need before the 2027 World Cup. Still, the atmosphere was electric – 37,000 fans, a trophy parade, and a proper test against a non-European side.

Back to my health journey – my first week on Wegovy has been nothing like I expected. I’ve lost three times as much weight as I was losing on 7.5mg of Mounjaro, which is great. I’m not getting carried away though – I didn’t eat brilliantly while I was away and had a few glasses of wine. But the numbers are encouraging.

What’s really surprised me is how different Wegovy feels compared to Mounjaro. On Mounjaro, I rarely felt hunger pangs, and I’d stop eating when I felt satisfied – not full. Wegovy is the opposite: I do feel hungry, but I also get full very quickly, which means I’m eating tiny portions and keeping my calories low. It’s a different kind of appetite control.

In terms of side effects, Wegovy’s been much kinder so far. No nausea, no eggy burps, no diarrhoea – just the usual constipation. Glycerine suppositories are still my go-to, and I’ve only needed tablets once.

I’ve joined a Wegovy Facebook group, which has been brilliant. Most people there haven’t used Mounjaro, so it’s interesting to see how their experiences compare. Wegovy seems to work well for the majority, and I’m feeling optimistic.

One thing to watch out for: the Wegovy pen is easier to use than Mounjaro’s, but only if you follow the instructions. It only needs to be primed once, and the dose button doesn’t stick out – so once you press it, the whole dose is released. A few people have lost their dose by not removing the needle cap or by pressing the button before injecting. These meds are expensive, so it’s worth watching a demo video first.

Quick comparison: Wegovy vs Mounjaro

Wegovy (semaglutide) targets GLP-1 receptors to reduce appetite and slow digestion.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) targets both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which may lead to greater weight loss and better blood sugar control.

Weight loss: Mounjaro has shown average losses of 20–22%, while Wegovy averages around 14–16%. However, this evens out over the long term with both giving similar results at 18 months.

Side effects: Both can cause nausea, constipation, and diarrhoea, but Mounjaro may be slightly more tolerable for some due to its dual mechanism.

Availability: Wegovy is more widely accessible in the UK, including through NHS weight management services. Mounjaro has faced supply issues and price hikes.

I've changed the way I report my stats to take into account my previous weight losses:

Weight - 12st 1lb
BMI - 31.9
Wegovy dose - 0.5mg
Total loss 1.5lb
Total weight loss on Mounjaro - 3 stone 12.5lbs
Total weight loss since 6th Jan 2025 - 4 stone 9lbs

So far, Wegovy’s working for me – and I’m embracing the change with cautious optimism. Between football, injections, and a few too many glasses of wine, it’s been a week to remember.

Bye for now x
