My Mounjaro Journey Week 21 - Protein
Hi all
I've hit a significant point this week; I now weigh (spoiler alert) 13 stone 7 pounds. Why's that significant? Well, it's the weight I've reached in the past with Weightwatchers, Rosemary Conley and that time I tried to survive on boiled eggs and grapefruit but, historically, I've never been able to get past. The diet train has always well and truly derailed
About 15 years ago I did manage to drop below thirteen stone but then I went on holiday to Majorca. After, marinating in sangria and snacks for a fortnight I was back to thirteen and a half stone by the time I got back. I feel like, if I can drop below this weight, I might actually be able to lose another couple of stone by the end of the year.
The nausea has returned with a vengeance this week.. I've hardly eaten today because I can't face it. Nothing tastes like it's supposed to and I have no hunger at all. I've even struggled to drink enough. I'm going to try and eat little and often until it passes.
I've been a bit constipated this week too and have had to use Senokot a couple of times. I haven't eaten anything different so I'm not sure what's going on. It's been manageable but it's definitely no fun. The other issue that's really started to bother me is the amount of times I have to get up for a wee at night. I can, quite literally, have to get up within fifteen minutes of going to bed because I feel uncomfortable. Sometimes, I might have to get up again before I finally drift off. I'll then wake up between 1am and 3am to go to the loo and then again between 5am and 6am. I get up at 7am on work days and I'm absolutely knackered. It's getting so bad I've actually started taking the odd half hour nap and I bloody hate sleeping during the day because it's a waste of life.
There's been a lot of stories circulating again about injecting yourself with a drug developed for diabetics. The usual idiots like to voice there opinions about taking drugs away from people who need it and that all us fatties need to do is show a bit of willpower. The trouble is, if willpower was the answer, no one would be overweight and we wouldn't need weight loss drugs. I bet they don't tell smokers who want to give up not to use nicotine patches or Champix tablets.
I listened to a podcast this week called What's Up Docs. It features doctors Chris and Alexander van Tulleken. The episode was about protein and how much we should be aiming to eat. They had an expert on who said that women should aim for around 55g per day and men should consume around 65g. They didn't discuss weight loss but the expert said that only body builders need to consume more.
The podcast discussed how we consume the majority of protein in the UK. Unsurprisingly, half comes from meet, dairy and fish but the expert advised that the majority should come from plant based foods, such as beans, lentils, peas, nuts, seeds, tofu and soya. Leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach and brussels sprouts are also a good source of protein. Basically, she was advising that a varied and balanced diet, low in meat but high in vegetables is the best way to get enough protein.
The expert also discussed the rise in protein shakes, desserts and bars. She said that these food items are ideal if you're busy and don' have time to make something to eat but that they shouldn't form part of your regular diet. The reason is that these are all ultra processed which is something we should be avoiding. The problem is, they've become very popular and lots of influencers are constantly promoting them.
